LONG BEACH, Calif. –
No. 2 Long Beach State and No. 4 Hawaii went head-to-head in another gritty match that saw the Beach come out victorious, 3-1 [25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19], on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach (16-3, 5-1 Big West) hit .350 with a season-high 16.5 total team blocks as they put on a show in front of a packed house of more than 3,000 fans.

The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 18-5 overall and 3-3 in Big West Conference action as the Beach held the Bows to a .174 attack percentage in the match. Coming into the contest, Hawaii was hitting a league-leading .353, but the Long Beach State defense kept the Bows off balance and limited them to one of their lowest offensive outputs of the season.

Leading the defensive charge at the net for the Beach was sophomore Simon Torwie who got the start at middle blocker and put up a career-high eight blocks (2 solos, 6 assists). Marc Moody, who also started at middle, added five blocks as did sophomore opposite Clarke Godbold, and freshman outside hitter Alex Nikolov.

Nikolov had a night as he finished the match with a double-double leading the Beach with 18 kills to go along with 12 digs. He hit .484 (18-3-31), while also serving up a pair of aces.

Godbold and junior outside hitter Spencer Olivier each tallied 12 kills in the match to help with the strong offensive showing that was piloted by sophomore setter Aidan Knipe who distributed 39 assists, while contributing three blocks and two kills.

Rounding out the solid team effort by Long Beach State was sophomore libero Mason Briggs who dug 16 balls for his 10th double-digit dig performance of the season. He has now led the Beach in digs on 14 occasions this season.

Much like the night before, the Beach and the Bows fought each other through a total of 39 ties and 19 lead changes. The first set saw half of those ties (18) and lead changes (9) as the conference foes took a tie game all the way to 23-23 as a block by Olivier and Torwie evened things up forcing a Hawaii timeout. The Beach came back and got another block from Olivier, Torwie, and Godbold to push it to set point as Hawaii utilized its final timeout. The breaks in action did not stop the Beach as Nikolov gave the Beach the win with an ace (25-23).

Long Beach State and Hawaii went back and forth in the second set and after 12 ties, the Beach scored three-straight points, thanks to back-to-back aces from Torwie, to take a 19-16 edge over the Bows. Despite a Hawaii timeout, Long Beach led the rest of the way as they closed the frame on a 4-1 run to win 25-20.

Leading 2-0, Long Beach State outhit Hawaii, .276 to .100 in the third set, but the Bows found a way to force a third set as Hawaii went on a 7-1 run to open up a 16-12 lead over the Beach. LBSU managed to make it a one-point game (21-20), but UH claimed the set, 25-21.

Using the momentum from the third set, Hawaii kicked off the fourth jumping out in front 5-0. But Long Beach State battle back and evened the score at 10-all after a 4-0 run. After trading the next several points, the Beach rattled off three-straight points to take an 18-14 lead as Hawaii called for a timeout. LBSU continued to surge ahead and put the game and match away on a kill from Torwie as the Beach won, 25-19.

Hawaii's Guilherme Voss and Spyros Chakas led the way with 11 kills each, while Jakob Thelle posted 43 assists, and Brett Sheward added 16 digs.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Friday, April 8 when they host No. 9 UC San Diego at the Walter Pyramid. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
