Long Beach State claimed three of the four track and field weekly conference awards.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Imani Carmouche, Ryley Fick, and Charlie Vernoy reeled in three of the four Big West weekly awards with Carmouche claiming the Women's Field Athlete of the Week, Fick claiming Women's Track Athlete of the Week, and Vernoy taking home the Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor.
Carmouche has been dominant so far this outdoor season with two High Jump victories on her resume already. This past week, the senior jumper cleared 1.75m (5-8.75) in the women's High Jump on her way to the win. She was not done there, as she launched herself 5.65m (18-6.5) in Long Jump for a new lifetime-best.
The Georgia native ranks ninth in the nation in High Jump and tops in the Big West, while also ranking fifth in the conference for Long Jump.
Fick led the distance runners this past weekend at UCLA. In her lone event, the junior posted a 10:26.28 on her way to a second place finish in the women's 3000m Steeplechase. She now owns the top mark in the conference by eight seconds. A new lifetime-best, it also moves her up to second on the all-time list.
While she didn't compete in the events this weekend, the Bakersfield native also owns the top conference mark in the 800m (2:09.37) and the sixth spot in the 1500m (4:32.96).
Last but not least, Vernoy posted three top five efforts over the weekend highlighted by a win in men's Discus. His throw went 56.98m (186-11) as he led a Long Beach State one-two-three finish. In Shot Put, his mark of 16.74m (54-11.25) was good for a third place finish, a foot and a half ahead of the Big West competitor. His third event was a 59.10m (193-11) throw in the Hammer where he finished fifth.
Among the conference rankings, the senior captain is second in Discus, third in Shot Put, and third in Hammer.
This is the first Big West award for both Carmouche and Fick, while it marks the second in Vernoy's career.
