No. 3 Long Beach State Sweeps No. 6 UC Santa Barbara on the Road

The Beach hit .350 as a team while rolling passed the Gauchos Saturday night

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 3 Long Beach State Men's Volleyball team hit .350 en route to a straight set sweep over No. 6 UC Santa Barbara as the Beach won by set scores of 25-21, 26-24, 25-22 on Saturday night at Rob Gym.
Long Beach State (14-3, 3-1 Big West) turned in a solid performance on the road keeping UC Santa Barbara (14-6, 3-2 Big West) off balance as the Beach led the Gauchos in almost every statistical category.
Sophomore setter Aidan Knipe once again did an excellent job distributing the ball as he picked up 41 assists, while also garnering seven digs, three blocks, and a kill.
Freshman outside hitter Alex Nikolov led the way with 17 kills to go along with six digs, while Spencer Olivier registered 15 kills on a .379 attack percentage, while adding three digs, two blocks, and one ace. Rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Beach was Clarke Godbold who logged 11 kills on 22 swings while committing just one attack error for a .455 hitting percentage. Godbold finished the match with four digs, three blocks, two assists, and an ace.
Defensively, sophomore libero Mason Briggs paced the backrow with 14 digs to go along with 12 errorless receptions. At the net, junior middle blocker Shane Holdaway posted six block assists to lead the LBSU blocking defense.
Overall, the three-set match saw 25 ties and seven lead changes as the conference foes battled each other through each set. The first game saw the Beach jump ahead 13-10 after tallying five-straight points that were highlighted by an ace and a kill from Olivier. From there, LBSU led the rest of the way and claimed the first set, 25-21.
The Beach and the Gauchos exchanges scoring runs in the second set before finding themselves knotted up at 24-all. However, a UCSB service error gave Long Beach set point and the Beach capitalized as Nikolov put the game away, 26-24.
With Long Beach State leading 2-0, UC Santa Barbara took a quick 4-1 lead in the third set before the two teams found themselves tied up 10 times in the frame. A kill from Olivier broke a 19-19 tie and sparked a 3-0 run as Long Beach State took a lead it would not relinquish. The Beach would complete the sweep on a kill from Godbold.
UCSB's Ryan Wilcox was the only Gaucho to reach double-figure kills as he finished the match with 10. Setter Patrick Paragas posted 32 assists and seven digs, while Dayne Chalmers logged eight digs and seven kills.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Friday, April 1 as the Beach host No. 4 Hawaii at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.
