LONG BEACH, Calif.. – Jonathon Long and Luis Ramirez have swept the Big West weekly awards after leading No. 6 Long Beach State to a series victory on the road against the reigning national champion Mississippi State Bulldogs this weekend.
Long had a dominant weekend at the plate to earn his first ever Big West Field Player of the Week honor. Recording at least one hit and one RBI in all three games against then-No. 3 Mississippi State, he slashed .545/.583/1.182 with two home runs, five RBI, and four runs scored.
The sophomore first baseman got his season started with an RBI single on Friday before having a career day on Saturday, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two homers, three RBI, and a walk. He ended the weekend with an RBI double on Sunday.
Ramirez was tabbed as the Dirtbags' opening day starter on Friday and was lights out in Starkville. The right-hander retired the first 14 batters he faced on his way to six innings of hitless ball. Of the 20 batters he faced, only two batters managed to get the ball out of the infield. The sophomore totaled six strikeouts on the day and only surrendered two walks.
