Career Night For Harris Leads Long Beach State To Road Win In Big West Opener At UC San Diego

The senior finished with 21 points and seven rebounds as the Beach controlled the second half in La Jolla.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Senior Tori Harris set a new career high with 21 points as Long Beach State shot over 50% in the second half and dominated on the glass to pull away from UC San Diego on the road on the way to a 66-52 win in the first game of the Big West conference slate.
Hot shooting from UC San Diego (3-8, 0-1 Big West) helped the Tritons jump out to an early lead on the night. UCSD hit five of their first six threes, and shot 6-of-9 in the first quarter led by three from Parker Montgomery to take a 22-20 lead after the first period.
After an evenly played second quarter saw the Tritons take a 36-33 lead into the locker room, Long Beach State (6-5, 1-0 Big West) controlled the action in the second half. The Beach opened the third quarter on a 12-3 run to establish control of the contest.
Harris got the scoring started, and a second-chance basket from Kennan Ka closed the run, giving the Beach a six-point lead at 45-39 after the first five minutes of the third.
In the fourth, the Tritons cut the lead to five points at 50-55, but Harris took over, scoring 11 straight points to push the lead to 66-50, dominating the closing minutes of the game.
Long Beach State shot 51.9 percent in the second half while holding UC San Diego to just 28.0 percent shooting over the same time frame, and the Beach controlled the boards as well. Long Beach State out-rebounded the Tritons 36-29 on the night, and finished with 15 offensive rebounds that ended up leading to 17 second-chance points. The Beach also had a good night in transition, scoring 10 points on the fast break while keeping UCSD scoreless on the break.
Long Beach State remains on the road to start Big West action, facing UC Riverside on New Year's Eve. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., with live coverage provided by ESPN+.
