Long Beach State Downs UC Riverside in Straight Sets on Senior Night

Victoria O’Sullivan led LBSU with a season-high 16 kills, while Dylan Dela Cruz logged 20 digs, and Callie Schwarzenbach registered her 500th career block

LONG BEACH, Calif. –
It was a big night for the three Long Beach State seniors as they played their final match inside the Walter Pyramid. The trio of Dylan Dela Cruz, Victoria O'Sullivan, and Callie Schwarzenbach each contributed in the Beach's 3-0 [25-9, 25-15, 25-19] sweep of UC Riverside on Saturday night.

With the win, Long Beach State finished the 2022 season with a 19-9 overall record, marking the most victories in a single-season since 2016. In conference action, LBSU concluded the year with a 14-6 record. The 14 Big West wins are the most since 2014.

The Beach hit .273 in the match, while limited UC Riverside (4-25, 2-18 Big West) to a mere .019 attack percentage, which was a season-low for a Long Beach State opponent this season. The Beach were solid on both sides of the ball as they recorded 43 kills to UCR's 18, and registered 61 digs to the Highlanders' 39.

O'Sullivan led the offensive attack with a season-high 16 kills as she hit .343 on the night. She also added six digs, three blocks, one assist, and one ace. She was the only player in the match to reach double-figures.

Dela Cruz led LBSU in the backcourt with 20 digs marking her 10th 20-dig performance of the season. In her career, Dela Cruz has logged 958 total digs and finished her senior season averaging 4.48 digs per set.

Schwarzenbach turned in a career performance in her final collegiate contest as she put up a team-leading four blocks to bring her Division I career total to 500. Additionally, she recorded eight kills in the match on a .353 attack percentage to contribute on both sides of the ball.

Joining Schwarzenbach with a milestone performance of her own was redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon who recorded 10 digs and nine kills, while hitting .444. With 10 digs, Chacon reached 1,000 career digs in her Division I career.
 

Also recording double-figure digs was sophomore outside hitter Natalie Glenn who finished the match with 12.

Both Zayna Meyer and Tia Chavira spent time at setter as Meyer collected 19 assists, while Chavira added 15 to go along with four digs, and three blocks.

The Beach started off strong as they used a 10-0 run to break open the first set (12-2). From their Long Beach strung together eight-straight points to take a commanding 20-3 advantage over the Highlanders, before winning the first set, 25-9. In the first set, LBSU hit .429 and posted a 90% sideout percentage as they held their opponent to single digits for the first time in over a year.

Long Beach State took a quick 2-0 lead in the second set and never looked back. The Beach led throughout the frame as they put together several small scoring runs to hold the edge over the Highlanders. After scoring four-straight points, LBSU held a 22-14 advantage, and went on to win the set, 25-15.

After a 1-1 tie in the third set, Long Beach State took a 2-1 lead after a kill from Glenn and led the rest of the way. The Beach extended their lead to 12 (18-6) after an ace from Chavira which forced a UCR timeout. Long Beach State would go on to win the third set and complete the sweep with a 25-19 victory.

Isabella Scarlett was UCR's leading score with five kills, while setter Tayler Hifo posted 10 assists, and libero Jessica Dean added 12 digs. Delaney Tate contributed in the backcourt with 11 digs, while Ayanna Kimbrough led the blocking defense with five blocks.

In his first year as Head Coach at Long Beach State, Tyler Hildebrand finished the season with a .679 winning percentage. His 19 total wins in his debut season is one more than legendary LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro collected in his first season as the helm of the Beach.
