Joel Murray finished with 21 points and Aboubacar Traore had a double-double in the loss.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – In front of a fired up crowd for the team's return to the Walter Pyramid, the Beach got a lift from two of their returners in Joel Murray and Aboubacar Traore, but a hot stretch early from Montana State proved to be too much in a 70-57 loss on Sunday.
Montana State (1-1), a tournament team from a year ago, came out hot and showed their quality in holding off the Beach after getting out of the blocks well. The Bobcats hit their first four 3-pointers to help stake the team to a 16-6 lead after the first five minutes of the game.
Long Beach State (1-2) was able to bounce back defensively, ultimately holding Montana State to just 40 percent shooting and forcing 18 turnovers, but the damage had been done against a quality opponent. The Bobcats were able to out-rebound the Beach 40-29 and kept LBSU to 40.4 percent shooting themselves throughout the contest.
Joel Murray finished with 21 points to lead the Beach in scoring, and Aboubacar Traore finished with his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, but the Beach were never able to truly cut into the gap. A Traore free throw cut the lead to six points at 48-42 with just over 10 minutes remaining, but Montana State was able to push the lead back to 13 where it would stay at the final whistle.
Long Beach State will remain at home for their next contest, hosting St. Katherine at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 19 in the Walter Pyramid. Tickets are available now, or fans can watch the broadcast on ESPN+.
