A message for Beach Nation from our interim Executive Director of Athletics
Hello Beach Family:Â
I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.
I worked at the University for over 32 years and feel very honored to be back at a familiar place that is close to my heart. While many of those years were spent in the Division of Administration and Finance, I served as the Associate Athletics Director for Business managing the department's budget and finances from 1998-2006. When I was not managing the finances of the Athletics Department, I was heavily involved and oversaw the University's budgets and finances as well as administering the campus-wide budget during the numerous ups and downs of the state economy. Interestingly, during my entire tenure at the university, I have worked closely with Athletics in various capacities such as the financing and construction of the Walter Pyramid, the original lease agreement for Blair Field, the passage of the Beach Pride Referendum that resulted in scholarship funding for student-athletes, the development of the Barrett Athletic Offices and the Soccer/Softball clubhouse, and of course addressing annual operating budget issues.
With my background and experience, I feel uniquely qualified to be involved in building an attainable plan for a fiscally sustainable department that will carry us forward. This strong fiscal foundation is a necessary component to support our primary objectives: supporting student-athlete welfare and academic success; proudly representing the University; hiring and retaining exceptional coaches and staff; and of course, remaining competitive and winning championships while embracing an inclusive and diverse environment.Â
Right now, the most frequent question from our supporters is, "How can I help right now?" One of the best ways is to continue your support of our teams through attendance at games and watching/listening when they are playing on the road. Your support is gratefully appreciated and does not go unnoticed by student-athletes, coaches, and staff. Our student-athletes often share with us how meaningful it is to see the Beach Family cheering them on in the stands or listening to games. Becoming a member of the Beach Athletic Fund today and making a gift to athletics scholarships, nutrition or to support the team you love the most, allows us to continue building on our rich championship culture.
At this time, the plan is to begin the search process for a permanent Athletic Director around the end of the calendar year with a goal of having them in place in early summer 2023. Ideally, there will be some overlap with our appointments to allow for a smooth transition.
I care deeply for the University, for the Athletic Department, for our amazing coaches and staff, for the student-athletes, and for all of you loyal supporters who have been there for us through thick and thin. Thank you for all your energy, efforts, and enthusiasm as we collectively strive to cultivate leaders and champions and move this Department forward. GO BEACH!
