Beach Keep Winning With 70-63 Victory at UC Davis

1/29/2022 3:51:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Joel Murray led four players in double-figures for LBSU on the road.

DAVIS, Calif. – Long Beach State battled through a little road adversity and extended their winning streak to six games at UC Davis, dropping the Aggies 70-63 on Saturday.

The Beach played without Joe Hampton and Drew Cobb who were in the COVID-19 protocol and Aboubacar Traore played just 11 minutes with foul trouble, but Long Beach State (10-9, 5-1 Big West) good minutes out of the bench and once again played solid defense, holding the Aggies under 40% shooting to grab the win.

The first half saw UC Davis (8-7, 1-3 Big West) pull out in front as Traore and Roberts ran into foul trouble to threaten a thin frontcourt. A Christian Anigwe putback put the Aggies on top 16-9, and the UC Davis would hold the lead until the final minute. Eight first half points from Tobias Rotegaard led the comeback for the Beach, though, and a Jadon Jones three tied up the game at 34-34 headed into halftime.
Joel Murray scored the first basket of the second half as Long Beach State clamped down defensively and started to pull away, as ultimately a three-point play from the junior point guard would push the lead to 11 points at 49-38.
UC Davis would fight back with a run to cut the lead to four at 53-49, but Colin Slater had an immediate answer and the Beach would back up to as high as 12 points before coming away with the 70-63 win.

Murray led LBSU in scoring with 15 points, while Slater had 15, Jordan Roberts chipped in 10 points with seven rebounds and Rotegaard had a career-high 10 points of the bench in 12 minutes.

Long Beach State will now begin a three-game homestand starting on Thursday, February 3 when the Beach hosts CSU Bakersfield in the Walter Pyramid.
