No. 5 LBSU Sweeps No. 9 Loyola in Dominating Performance

The Beach hit .515 in the victory to improve to 4-0

CHICAGO –
The No. 5 Long Beach State Men's Volleyball team turned in a dominating performance on Saturday night at the Gentile Arena as the Beach swept No. 9 Loyola Chicago, 3-0 [25-17, 25-17, 25-22] after hitting an impressive .515 in the match.

The Beach improved to 4-0 on the year and have not hit lower than .413 in a match this year as sophomore setter Aidan Knipe has been masterful in running the LBSU offense. With the Beach controlling the match, the Ramblers were held to a .173 attack percentage as they fell to 3-3 on the season.

Long Beach State started the match off strong as the Beach kicked off the first set on a 4-0 run and led the entire game. LBSU hit a sizzling .650 (13-0-20) in the opening frame and did not commit an attack error on 20 swings as they cruised to a 25-17 win.

The Beach continued their balanced offensive showing into the second set as they hit .565, knocking down 15 kills on 23 swings with just two errors, while boasting a sideout percentage of 88 percent. Long Beach State rolled to a 25-17 victory to go up two sets to none.

LBSU used a 4-0 run in the third set to break a 6-6 tied and take a 10-6 edge over the Ramblers. From there, the Beach led the rest of the way. Long Beach pushed the game to match point, 24-20, on a kill from Spencer Olivier and Loyola managed to stay alive for a few more points before the Beach closed it out, 25-22, on a kill from Shane Holdaway to complete the sweep.



Holdaway hit a hot .750 in the match with six kills on eight errorless swings, while freshman outside hitter Alex Nikolov led the Beach in scoring with 12 kills on a .429 attack percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Clarke Godbold was also on point for the Beach as he finished the match with 11 kills on a .474 clip. Meanwhile Oliver hit .533 with nine kills on 15 attempts, while committing just one error.

Olivier also led the Beach with seven digs, while Godbold added six. Nikolov and Knipe each had five digs for LBSU.



At the net, Holdaway posted four blocks (1 solo, 3 assists) and Godbold put up four block assists.

Calvin Sanborn came off the bench for the Beach and served up a pair of aces.



Loyola was kept off balance most of the night as Colton Brooks was the Ramblers' leading scorer with eight kills on a .111 attack percentage. Garrett Zolg distributed 18 assists, while Dan Mangun added eight. Parker Van Buren finished the contest with five digs, while also adding seven kills.

The Ramblers were held without a block for most of the match and finished the night with just 1.5 total team blocks to the Beach's 6.0.

Long Beach State will return home to host No. 11 Ohio State on Friday, January 28 at 6 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
