Dirtbags Receive Second Top 25 Preseason Ranking

The Dirtbags have been ranked the No. 24 team in the nation by D1Baseball.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State received their second Top 25 ranking of the preseason,ranking No. 24 by D1Baseball.com on Tuesday. They were also ranked No. 24 by Perfect Game two weeks ago.
The Dirtbags are coming off a very strong 2021 campaign that saw their schedule limited to just 43 games. Finishing with an overall record of 28-15 and coming in third in the Big West at 26-14, the Dirtbags were winners in 15 of their last 17 games of the season and only lost one weekend series all year.
Statistically, LBSU ranked 14th in shutouts (6), 20th in hits allowed per nine innings (7.76), 21st in team ERA (3.75), 28th in WHIP (1.29), and 50th in strikeouts per nine innings (9.5). Only one team in the nation ranked higher in all five categories.
Looking at the roster, the Dirtbags return 27 letterwinners from a year ago. Among them is Freshman All-American and Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year, Devereaux Harrison. The draft-eligible sophomore has garnered two preseason All-American honors for the upcoming season after posting a 1.57 ERA in 34.1 innings last year as the closer.
The team also returns All-Big West First Team selection, Chase Luttrell, as well as Second Team selection, Matt Fields, and Honorable Mention, Charlie Loust. A 2020 Freshman All-American, Luis Ramirez, is also back and expected to be the Friday night starter for the Dirtbags this season.
Long Beach State also welcomes in one of the most notable under the radar recruiting classes according to Baseball America. Among them is infielder Eddie Saldivar, who is ranked as the No. 180 prospect of this year's college freshmen.
Of the D1Baseball preseason top 25, the Dirtbags are set to play three ranked opponents including the defending champion and No. 4 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs. They also have games scheduled against No. 18 Oregon State, and No. 20 UC Irvine.
