No. 5 Long Beach State Sweeps Erskine

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 5 Long Beach State Men's Volleyball team showed their depth in a 3-0 [25-13, 25-15, 25-11] sweep over Erskine on Monday night at the Walter Pyramid as the Beach emptied their bench in the all-around team effort.
Sophomore setter Aidan Knipe led the Beach (2-0) as he registered 34 assists and directed the offense to a whopping .508 attack percentage. Knipe distributed the ball well as he found freshman outside hitter Alex Nikolov for 11 kills and sophomore opposite Clarke Godbold for nine kills on the night.
While the Beach offense flex its muscles, the LBSU defense was solid with 10.0 total team blocks in the contest which limited the Flying Fleet (0-5) to a .015 attack percentage. At the net, Godbold put up five block assists, while Marc Moody posted one solo block and four block assists.
Nikolov was outstanding once again as he recorded his first double-figure kill match of his collegiate career to go along with a team-leading six digs, and two service aces.
At the service line, the Beach logged 10 aces as sophomore Simon Torwie led the way with a career-high four aces. Also recording a multi-ace match for Long Beach State was Godbold who served up a pair, while Knipe and Shane Holdaway each added one.
The Beach started the match firing on all cylinders as they jumped out in front to a quick 11-5 lead. Nikolov notched his two aces back-to-back in the first set to give LBSU a 16-7 edge as the Beach controlled the match. Long Beach State knocked down 13 kills on 18 swings with just one error in the frame as the Beach hit .667 in the first set and rolled to a 25-13 win.
The second set began with the Beach and the Fleet trading points. Long Beach State broke the 10-10 tie on a kill from Nikolv that sparked three-straight points as LBSU took a 13-10 advantage over Erskine. From there, Long Beach State held the lead the rest of the way and closed the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-15.
LBSU kicked off the third set on a 6-1 run and never looked back. The Beach his .600 in the set (13-1-20) and used an 8-0 run to break the game open (17-5). With most of their starters out of the rotation, the Beach relied heavily on their reserves who stepped up and led the squad to a 25-11 victory to complete the sweep.
Nathan Harlan came off the bench for the Beach and logged three kills on six errorless swings, while freshman Dane Hillis made his collegiate debut as did redshirt freshman Nato Dickinson. Junior Calvin Sanborn also came into the game in the third set and made some quality plays as LBSU showcased its top-ranked recruiting class.
Erskine's Austin Edgerrun led the way for the Fleet with 10 kills and two blocks. Juan Alcoba finished the match with 17 assists and seven digs, while Kacper Rybarczyk concluded the contest with five kills, three digs, two aces, and one assist.
Long Beach State will hit the road to the Midwest for its first road swing of the season. The Beach will take on No. 9 Lewis on Friday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. (PT) in Romeoville, Ill., before battling it out with No. 8 Loyola Chicago on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 5 p.m. (PT) in the Windy City.
