Jason Smith was named the men’s Big West Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Jason Smith has been named the men's Big West Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career. This marks the third straight week that Long Beach State has had a student-athlete earn the award.
Smith was the lone Beach competitor last week as went up to the bay area for the Stanford Invitational, participating in the High Jump and the Long Jump.
The senior did the Long Jump on Friday night and took home the top spot by just over an inch against a UCLA jumper. He recorded three jumps at 7.78m (25-6.25) marking a new outdoor personal best and his mark ranks ninth best in program history.
In his first time high jumping outdoors since the end of 2018, he claimed the victory in Stanford setting a new season-best for the team at 2.20m. While he just missed out on a new personal best, the mark of 7 feet, 2.5 inches ranks fifth best in program history.
Smith was the only individual to win two events at the Stanford Invitational and it is the first time he has won both events at a single meet since February 7, 2020.
The San Bruno native currently ranks number one in the conference in both jumps. In High Jump, he is tied for third in the West Region and tied for fifth in the entire NCAA. In the Long Jump, he is eighth in the West Region and 14th in the nation.
Smith and the rest of the outdoor track and field team are set to compete in the Fullerton Spring Invite this week.
