Long Beach State Sweeps UC Irvine to Advance to Big West Tournament Semifinals

HONOLULU, Hawai'i –
The Long Beach State men's volleyball team came into the Big West Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed and earned a sweep over No. 6 seed UC Irvine, 3-0 [25-22, 25-19. 25-21] on Thursday evening at the Stan Sheriff Center.

With the victory, the Beach (7-4) advance to the semifinals to play No. 2 seed UC Santa Barbara on Friday, April 23 at 4:30 p.m. (HT)/7:30 p.m. (PT). While the Anteaters conclude their season with a 2-14 overall record.

The Beach hit an impressive .432 in the contest as Spencer Olivier knocked down 18 kills to hit .424, while Ethan Siegfried added 10 kills on a .444 attack percentage. Setter Aidan Knipe distributed 42 assists as each player hit over .300 in the match.

Defensively, libero Mason Briggs registered 10 digs, while Shane Holdaway put up four blocks, while Simon Andersen and Siegfried added three blocks of their own.

The match begun as a close contest as the two teams traded points early on and battled through 10 ties before the Beach went on a 5-0 run to open up a 15-10 advantage over the Anteaters. From there, Long Beach State led the rest of the way and came away with a 25-22 set one victory.
 

Long Beach State went on to jump out in front of UC Irvine 4-1 to start the second set. The Beach led the rest of the way as they rolled to a 25-19 win and took a 2-0 set lead.

UC Irvine took an early lead to start the third set, but the Beach used a 3-0 run to take a 10-9 lead. LBSU extended its lead to three (14-11) before finding themselves deadlocked with the Anteaters, 21-21. Following a Long Beach State timeout, the Beach regrouped and closed the set and match on a 4-0 run to win, 25-21, and complete the sweep.
