No. 7 Long Beach State Sweeps CSUN on Senior Night

LONG BEACH, Calif. – With fans inside the Walter Pyramid for the first time this season, the No. 7 Long Beach State men's volleyball team responded in a big way. The Beach earned a 3-0 [25-23, 25-23, 25-23] sweep over CSUN on Saturday night.
With the win, Long Beach State (6-4, 6-4 Big West) clinches the No. 3 seed in the Big West Conference Tournament next week. The Beach have now won 23-straight home conference matches.
The Beach hit .316 to the Matadors' (2-8, 2-8 Big West) .143 as LBSU was led offensively by Ethan Siegfried's 11 kills, while Aidan Knipe dished out 25 assists. Simon Torwie also added nine kills, while Spencer Olivier contributed seven. Olivier also served up three aces in the match as the Beach finished the contest with nine aces their highest output of the season.
Mason Briggs led the Long Beach State defense with 11 digs, while Torwie posted a career-high four blocks at the net. Shane Holdaway added three stops at the net, while Simon Andersen registered two as LBSU kept the CSUN offense off balance.
The match began close as the two teams traded points early on. However, Long Beach State used a 4-0 run to take a 21-20 lead. Although CSUN managed to tie the game at 22-all, the Beach were determined as they closed out the first set on a kill from Siegfried to win, 25-23.
The Beach started the second set off strong, but CSUN chipped away before rattling off four-straight points to cut the Long Beach State lead down to one (11-10). The Beach went back out in front, but the Matadors once again came within one (20-19). Despite the pressure, LBSU pushed away to set point (24-21) and claimed the second set, 25-23.
Long Beach State took a 2-0 set lead into the third set, and the two teams quickly began exchanging points. The Beach would break a 9-9 tie on a kill from Siegfried which gave them a lead they would not relinquish. LBSU scored four-consecutive points to extend its lead to five (18-13) before closing out the set and match on back-to-back aces from Siegfried (25-18).
CSUN's Griffin Walters led the Matadors with 10 kills, while Kyle Merchen distributed 18 assists to go along with six digs. Johnny Anselmo also added six digs in the back row.
Long Beach State will be in action next at the Big West Conference Tournament on Thursday, April 22 in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
