Three Beach Players Record Double-Doubles in Four Set Win Over No. 3 UC Santa Barbara

Spencer Olivier led the way with 16 kills, 17 digs, five blocks, two assists and a .333 attack percentage in the victory

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 10 Long Beach State men's volleyball team responded in a big way as the Beach downed No. 3 UC Santa Barbara, 3-1 [23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21], on Sunday evening at the Walter Pyramid in the squad's home opener.
Long Beach State (1-1, 1-1 Big West) received several outstanding performances as five Beach players scored in double figures and three notched double-doubles in the four-set win over UC Santa Barbara (5-4, 1-3 Big West).
Leading the way for the Beach was redshirt sophomore outside hitter Spencer Olivier who recorded a new career-high with 16 kills and 17 digs for the third double-double of his career. Olivier had a solid game all around as he hit .333, logged five blocks, and dished out a pair of assists.
Freshman outside hitter Clarke Godbold impressed in his Walter Pyramid debut as he knocked down 13 kills to go along with 13 digs for his first collegiate double-double. He also added a pair of blocks.Freshamn opposite Simon Torwie also earned a double-double as he finished the match with 11 kills, 11 digs, five blocks, and one ace.
The Beach's strong offensive performance also saw sophomore middle blocker Shane Holdaway register a new career-high with 12 kills on a sizzling .579 attack percentage. Holdaway also contributed three blocks and an ace.
If that weren't enough hot-hitters for the Beach, senior middle blocker Simon Andersen added 11 kills of his own on an impressive .579 clip. Andersen led the Beach at the net with six blocks.
LBSU hit .345 in the match as redshirt freshman setter Aidan Knipe dished out 57 assists to go along with five digs and three kills. Knipe's steady hands helped the Beach to a balanced offensive showing as they won the final three sets after dropping the first.
While the offense impressed, so did the defense. Freshman libero Mason Briggs notched nine digs for the Beach and paced the defensive efforts in the match as LBSU held UCSB to just .194 hitting. Additionally, Briggs distributed three assists.
After dropping a close first set, 25-23, Long Beach State bounced back showing their resiliency and won the next three contests to earn the four-set victory. The Beach out-hit the Gauchos in every frame and turned in a .464 attack percentage in the fourth set.
Long Beach State has now won 20-straight home conference contests dating back to 2017. That mark is second-best in the LBSU record books behind 27 home league wins from 1998-01.
UC Santa Barbara was led by Randy DeWeese who concluded the match with 17 kills, five digs, two blocks, one assist, and one ace. Casey McGarry posted 34 assists and nine digs, while Dayne Chalmers led the way with 17 digs, and Ryan Wilcox added 14. At the net, Roy McFarland put up four blocks.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Friday, March 26 when the Beach host No.12 UC Irvine at 4 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid.
