Beach Women’s Basketball Opens the 2021-22 Campaign with 80-61 Victory Over Biola

Maddi Utti recorded a double-double in her Long Beach State debut to lead four players in double-figures

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's basketball team kicked off the 2021-22 season with an 80-61 victory over Biola on Tuesday night at the Walter Pyramid behind four double-figure performances, including a double-double from senior forward Maddi Utti.
The Beach (1-0) led the Eagles, who were playing an exhibition contest, the entire game, but broke the game open towards the end of the first half. LBSU surged ahead in the second half leading by as many as 21 points (50-29) in the game.
Utti led the Beach with 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three steals and one block, while junior Jasmine Hardy also registered 12 points to go along with five boards and three steals. Rounding out the double-figure scorers for the Beach were redshirt sophomore Kianna Hamilton-Fisher (10 points) and freshman Thea Mikkelsen (10 points).
The game got underway with Ma'Qhi Berry making a driving layup within the first minute and a half to put the Beach up. Biola stayed close making it a one-point game (13-12) with 3:51 remaining in the first quarter, but the Beach pulled back out in front by six (18-12) before closing the first quarter with an 18-16 lead.
Long Beach State broke the game open in the second quarter. After Biola evened the score at 19-19, LBSU closed the first half on a 14-2 run in the final four minutes to take a 39-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. Kicking off the 14-2 charge wasHardy as she drained a three with 4:00 minutes on the clock. Hardy would finish the game with a trio of 3-pointers as she shot 50.0-percent from long distance.
The halftime break did not slow the Beach down as Long Beach State came out and extended its lead to as many as 21 (50-29) in the third quarter before closing the frame with a 60-43 advantage.
The Beach continued their balanced offense into the fourth quarter as they connected on 9-of-17 field goals for a 52.9 field goal percentage in the frame en route to a 19-point win.
With a comfortable lead, the Beach began emptying bench as seven reserves saw action on the court and combined for 34 points in the complete team effort.
Berry and Justina King each added nine points, while King also contributed five rebounds and five steals for the Beach.
Biola was led by Amiah Simmons and Jordan Rabe who concluded the game with 17 and 16 points, respectively. However, Simmons committed six turnovers as Long Beach State's defense forced 21 turnovers from the Eagles.
Long Beach State will hit the road on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Boise State. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
