Beach Women’s Basketball Rolls to a 66-50 Win Over Santa Clara

The Beach shot 48.2-percent from the field and were solid on defense forcing 26 turnovers in the victory

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's basketball team turned in an all-around solid showing on both sides of the ball on Sunday afternoon en route to defeating Santa Clara, 66-50, at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach improved to 4-0 on the year, while handing the Broncos' (3-1) their first loss of the season. LBSU shot 48.2-percent from the field and a hot 57.1-percent from long distance, while the defense forced 26 turnovers and held Santa Clara to a 29.5-field goal percentage.
Leading the offense for the Beach was junior guard Justina King who scored 17 points to go along with five assists, two rebounds, and two steals. Also reaching double-figures was sophomore guard Kianna Hamilton-Fisher, who came off the bench and poured in a season-high 13 points.
Despite being out-rebounded, 41-23, Long Beach State made up for it in steals with 13 to Santa Clara's six as well as turnovers, forcing the Broncos into 26 turnovers in the game. LBSU capitalized scored 27 points off turnovers.
The Beach also held the edge in assists (20-7), however, Santa Clara managed to stay within striking distance for the first three quarters due to LBSU's foul trouble. The Beach committed 22 fouls and sent the Broncos to the line 26 times as Santa Clara scored 20 points off free throws. Meanwhile, the Beach made just four free throws on eight attempts in the game.
Santa Clara opened the game with an early 8-3 lead, but Long Beach State was quick to turn the tables on the Broncos as the Beach used an 8-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back threes from King and Hamilton-Fisher, to take an 11-8 advantage. Despite the run, Santa Clara regained the lead and took an 18-15 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
The Beach took the lead for good in the second quarter, going on a 7-1 scoring run to close out the first half. With 18 seconds remaining, Ma'Qhi Berry collected the steal and Maddi Utti made a fast break layup
Long Beach State led by as many as 10 points on three occasions in the third quarter, with the final time coming at 4:45 as King's pull-up jumper put the Beach up 46-38. However, Santa Clara continued to chip away, scoring 12 of their 14 points on free throws and whittling the Beach's lead down to five (48-43) with 2:44 left to go, before LBSU took a 52-46 lead into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the Beach really pull away from the Broncos as LBSU was only called for two fouls compared to the 11 the Beach were called for in the third quarter. With Santa Clara not going to the line at all in the final frame, LBSU held the Broncos to just two field goals and out-scored them 14-4 as the Beach led by as many as 20 points (66-46), before winning by a score of 66-50.
Utti led the squad with seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals, while Berry added four assists, two steals and a pair of blocks.
Lindsey VanAllen led the way for the Broncos with 16 points and five steals, while Mere Wiehl added seven rebounds and four points.
Long Beach State will hit the road for its longest road swing of the season as the Beach head east to Charlottesville, Va., to take on Richmond and Rhode Island at the UVA Classic. LBSU and Richmond will face off on Friday, Nov. 26, before the Beach play Rhode Island on Sunday, Nov. 28.
