Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer had a 47-61 record in just over four seasons.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer, head coach of the Long Beach State University women's volleyball program, has been relieved of coaching duties effective immediately, Executive Director of Athletics Andy Fee announced Monday.

"Making a coaching change is never easy, but it's an especially difficult decision when you know that coach has history with our program and university," said Fee.  "However, after a thorough review and evaluation of our program, the past five years have not met expectations for a program with a rich tradition and legacy of championships. We thank Joy for her service to our campus and her unquestionable commitment to our student-athletes."

McKienzie-Fuerbringer was in her fifth season in charge of the Beach.  LBSU will begin a national search for a new head coach. Current assistant Sabrina Hernandez will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. LBSU has a 9-12 overall record, 3-7 in the Big West Conference, with ten matches remaining on the schedule.

Long Beach State is one of just seven Division I programs with three or more NCAA Women's Volleyball Championships, and the Beach has won five national titles in the program's history. The program additionally ranks ninth all-time with 1,252 wins, and only Stanford can boast more National Players of the Year than Long Beach State's six. The Beach has made eight final four appearances and is one of just seven programs to be named No. 1 in the country more than 25 times in the AVCA Coaches Poll. Long Beach State's 1998 team was the first NCAA Division I team to go undefeated, posting a 36-0 record led by National Player of the Year and three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May.
