IRVINE, Calif. –
Long Beach State battled UC Irvine to five sets on Saturday evening in the Black and Blue Rivalry game at the Bren Events Center, but came up just short as LBSU dropped a 3-2 [25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 21-25, 10-15] contest.

With the loss, the Beach drop to 9-10 on the year and 3-5 in Big West Conference action, while the Anteater improve to 12-6 overall and 5-3 in league action.

The evenly matched contest saw LBSU hit .244 to UCI's .185 attack percentage. However, the Anteaters held the edge over the Beach in serving as UC Irvine tallied eight aces to Long Beach State's three. Overall, the conference foes battled each other through a total of 18 ties and nine lead changes, before UCI went on an 8-0 run in the fifth set to break the set and match open.

Long Beach State was led offensively by Katie Kennedy who led the way with 14 kills to go along with three digs, and two blocks. Also recording double-digits for the Beach were Erykah Lovett and Tia Chavira who finished with double-doubles. Lovett posted 11 kills and a career-high 20 digs, while Chavira registered 11 kills to go along with 32 assists. Chavira added five digs and two blocks, while hitting .500 (11-1-20) in the match.

On the defensive end, freshman defensive specialist Jenna Giambi logged 15 digs, while sophomore libero Nicole Hoff tallied 13 digs. At the net, freshman Kameron Bacon and junior Kashauna Williams led the blocking defense with seven blocks apiece, while Miranda Canez added four blocks to go along with six kills and an ace.

Long Beach State started the match off strong, hitting .385 in the first set and jumping out to a 7-3 advantage. After extending their lead to seven (11-4), the Beach looked to be in control of the frame, until UCI whittled the LBSU lead down to two (16-14). However, Long Beach State would surge back, going up 19-14 and forcing an Irvine timeout. Following the break in action, the Beach continued to hold steady the rest of the way as they claimed the opening set, 25-19.

UC Irvine started the second set on a 5-0 run, but Long Beach State chipped away and made it a one-point game (7-6). The Anteaters again would take a strong lead after going on a 6-1 run, but once again, the Beach battled back to even the score at 17-17. From there, UCI broke the tie and took a 22-19 edge, before evening the match at one set apiece with a 25-21 set two win.

The third set was a battle from the start as the two teams traded points back and forth until Long Beach State took a two-point lead (10-8) forcing a UC Irvine timeout. The Beach continued their strong showing and extended their lead to 14-10 on a block from Bacon and Kennedy. After UCI managed to cut LBSU's lead down to one (18-17), Long Beach State jumped back out in front and closed the set with three-straight points to win, 25-21.

Leading two sets to one, Long Beach State kicked off the fourth set on a 4-0 run. But just as in the earlier three sets, UC Irvine came bounding back and evened the score at 5-5 to set the stage for another back-and-forth affair. The conference foes fought through five ties before UC Irvine took the lead for good en route to winning, 25-21, and forcing a fifth and deciding set.

The fifth set was much of the same as the tale of the tape showed six ties and four lead changes early on. UC Irvine held a one-point lead (8-7) at the media timeout, and would come back from the break and continue their run, rattling off eight-consecutive points to break the game open and send it to match point (14-7). The Beach strung together three points of their own, but it wasn't enough, as UC Irvine downed Long Beach State 15-10.

The Anteaters were led by Joy Umeh's 26 kills on .333 hitting. Kelly Negron (28 assists) and Indy DeSmet (18 assists) paced the offense, while Negron added 12 digs for a double-double. Carly Ritcher led the defense with 14 digs, while Onye Ofoegbu was one block shy of a double-double as she finished the night with 15 kills and nine blocks.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 22 at the Walter Pyramid when the Beach hosts UC Riverside at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
