Former Women’s Golf Coach Millie Stanley Passes

Stanley was the head coach of the program for four years in the 80s.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Famer and former golf coach Millie Stanley has died at the age of 91.
Stanley was a legendary figure in Long Beach State women's golf who played a larger and more interesting role in the program than would be allowed under today's NCAA rules.
Enrolling at Long Beach State at the age of 47 as an already accomplished amateur golfer, Stanley starred for four seasons and even served as a player-coach in her final season in 1980-91 while earning her degree. She then led the team for four more seasons in the competitive WCAA.
The 1984 WCAA Coach of the Year, Stanley would go on to continue to play high-level golf, ultimately winning five Long Beach Championships; two Los Angeles Championships; three SoCal Publinx Championships, and eight SoCal senior titles before her induction into the Long Beach State Hall of Fame in 1988. Stanley was also a charter inductee into the Long Beach Golf Hall of Fame in 1996, and inducted into the Women's Golf Coaching Association Hall of Fame in 1989.
Her commitment to local golf did not end there, however. The Southern California Golf Association women's championship trophy is named after Stanley, and additionally Stanley set up an endowment through her foundation supporting scholarships for Long Beach State women's golfers.
"Millie gave a lifetime of generosity to the women's golf program at Long Beach State first as a coach, and then through her gifts to the program and her endowment" said the program's current coach, Joey Cerulle. "She will surely be missed and we are thankful that her legacy will always continue."
