Five former Long Beach State players made opening day rosters for the delayed start to the Major League Baseball season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Five former Dirtbags are on opening day MLB rosters as the league gets fully underway July 24 after the start of the season was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The players representing the Beach are familiar faces, led by third baseman Evan Longoria, who begins his 13th season in the majors with the San Francisco Giants.
Three younger infielders are also continuing to feature professionally. Matt Duffy makes a debut with a new team, playing for the New York Yankees, while Garrett Hampson is in his third year with the Colorado Rockies and Jeff McNeil will try to recapture his form from 2019 when he was named an All-Star for the first time with the New York Mets.
On the mound, Bryan Shaw continues to pitch for the Colorado Rockies, while Jared Hughes is on the Injured List for the Mets.
