Please helps us welcome these new additions for the upcoming campaign.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Four Division I transfers as well as one junior college transfer will help make up the 2020 roster for Long Beach State soccer, as Mauricio Ingrassia and his staff announce the new faces who will help make up a part of the team in the coming campaign, with the Division I transfers having already trained with the team after enrolling at LBSU in the spring semester.
Sophie Jones; Forward, 5-8, Upland, Calif. (Claremont HS/Arizona)
The first alphabetically of four Division I transfers in the class, Sophie Jones played in 12 games as a true freshman at Arizona in 2019, including playing a season-high in minutes with two shots against UC Irvine. A star at Claremont High School, Jones earned All-CIF and all-league honors after scoring 23 goals with 10 assists as a senior. She was also named the Inland Valley Player of the Year as a senior, and played club with Slammers FC.
Ingrassia on Jones: "Sophie has brought a hard-working jovial personality to our program. She is a good target forward, that can be equally dangerous with both feet. We are glad to have Sophie at The Beach."
Aimee Medwin; Defender, 5-4, Hobart, Australia (Marybrynong Sports College/Mississippi)
Aimee Medwin is a decorated Australian prospect who comes to the Beach after one season at Ole Miss, where she played in five games, including against Long Beach State. She was part of the youth national team system in Australia, including playing for the U16 Women's National Team, and played for the semi-professional South Melbourne FC prior to coming to the States.
Ingrassia on Medwin: "Aimee has fit right in with our team at right back. She is very diligent both on and off the field, and has adapted very well to our style of play. She played in three games for us in spring, but it was enough to know she has real quality on both sides of the ball, and will be a force for our program."
Daria Petredes; Midfielder, 5-4, Yorba Linda, Calif. (El Dorado HS/USC)
A transfer from USC, Daria Petredes has two seasons of eligibility remaining and comes to the Beach after missing the 2019 season due to injury. With USC, Petredes had her best season in 2018, where as a redshirt sophomore she played in 18 games, scoring against Washington and adding an assist against Missouri. She also redshirted in 2017 after debuting with 13 appearances as a true freshman in 2016 with USC, winning the National Championship. That year, Long Beach State defeated USC at home 1-0. She enjoyed a prolific junior career that saw her make the US U18 Women's National Team and star at El Dorado High School, where she led her squad to the section and state semifinals. She played club soccer for Beach FC.
Ingrassia on Petredes: "Daria is a great addition to our midfield. She brings maturity, composure, and a high soccer IQ that will make us exponentially better when she is on the field. She has battled injuries, but when she is healthy and fit, she is on par with any midfielder in the country."
Hailey Smith; Forward, 5-10, San Jose, Calif. (Archbishop Mitty HS/Washington State)
Smith will have three seasons of eligibility remaining after coming to the Beach after two seasons at Washington State. With the Cougars, Smith played in 19 games as a true freshman, scoring two goals with two assists before redshirting during the 2019 campaign. Smith also had plenty of success in high school, leading Archbishop Mitty HS to four straight league titles and scoring 21 goals over the course of her final three seasons. Additionally, Smith had national attention as well as part of the U18 Women's National Team pool in 2017.
Ingrassia on Smith: "Hailey will be able to stretch defenses with her next level speed. She comes with good experience and will be a headache for opposing defenses. She will be our next great attacking presence."
Bella Wakeling; Defender, 5-4, Carson City, Nev. (Carson HS/Lake Tahoe CC)
The lone junior college transfer among the newcomers, Wakeling is coming off of two strong seasons at Lake Tahoe Community College, leading her squad to a pair of CCCAA Final Four appearances. Earning numerous accolades for her play in 2019, Wakeling was a first-team All-American and first-team Scholar All-American, while also earning first team All-West Region honors as well as being name the Golden Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year. That comes on the heels of four seasons as a letterwinner at Carson High School in Nevada where she finished her career with 21 goals and nine assists.
Ingrassia on Wakeling: "Bella comes to us after two solid years of JC soccer in Lake Tahoe. A natural attacking player, she was converted to an outside back in college. She will contend for playing time right away. She brings tenacity and quickness to the back row."
