COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – On Monday, USA Volleyball announced the 22 athletes selected for the 2020 Boys Youth National Training Team. At the helm of the squad is Long Beach State men's volleyball associate head coach Nick MacRae. Current LBSU statistical coordinator, Jon Parry, will join MacRae on staff as the team's statistician.
The team is comprised of eight players from the Southern California region, three from Northern California, three from the Great Lakes, and two each from Florida, Arizona, and Ohio Valley, as well as one each from the Lone Star and Iowa.
"This group of the Boys Youth National Training Team has been made up of the 22 most resilient athletes," MacRae said. "Within this group, we have individuals who have great arms, the physicality, the size, and great volleyball IQ.
"One trait that everyone collectively shares, and this has been the foundation of our current Youth National Team, is that they are all willing to compete as hard as they can for as long as they can. The 22 that we have selected have shown that they have an understanding of the importance that every single rep, point, set, and match should be prepared for the same way."
The assistant coaches on staff are two-time Olympian, gold medalist, and head coach at the University of Jamestown, Riley Salmon, and Lindenwood assistant coach, Ben Duckworth.
While Parry handles statistics, Jordan Kelly of USA Volleyball will serve as team leader.
"I have been continuously working with one of the best USA staffs that I have ever been with within the USA pipeline," MacRae said of Duckworth, Salmon, Parry, and Kelly. "Together, we will continue to widen the base through the entire country and ensure that every youth athlete gets the knowledge, training, and preparation from which we are giving our Youth National Team members."
Plans for the team are currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
