Over $160,0000 was raised in support of student-athlete scholarships.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Unique circumstances led to a tremendous outpouring of support for Long Beach State student-athletes on Giving Tuesday on May 5th, with donations of more than $160,000 coming in to support scholarships over the course of the day.
"When we put out the call for our supporters to go all in for Beach Athletics to help ensure our financial future on Giving Tuesday, they answered the call with a resounding "Go Beach!" said Long Beach State Director of Athletics Andy Fee.
With festivities moving online due to California's stay at home policies throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic, fans, donors, coaches, staff and student-athletes were encouraged throughout the day to interact online via a number of virtual activities.
The day started with a breakfast recipe with Long Beach State Sports Nutrition, a coffee break with volleyball legends Misty May-Trainor, Taylor Crabb and Josh Tuaniga and then lunch with Dan Monson and Beach Men's Basketball.
The afternoon continued with more fun activities as New York Mets All-Star Jeff McNeil challenged Dirtbags head coach to a game of MLB The Show over Twitch. Former student-athletes David Banuelos and Jessica Gertz challenged volleyball coaches Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer and Matt Fuerbringer to "The Newlywed Game," Mike Gallo was the DJ for "Happy Hour" and the day wrapped with a Toast from Director of Athletics Andy Fee.
Now more than ever the funds raised via donation are critical to support our student-athletes.
In addition to the loss of revenue from the suspension of spring sports, Long Beach State is making the commitment to providing the allowed NCAA eligibility relief for spring seniors, allowing for those who wish to return to competition representing The Beach to do so, something not all universities are choosing to do.
We are thankful to be able to do so, in large part due to the generosity of LB Nation. As part of the Drive to 4900, nearly 100 new members to the Beach Athletic Fund joined us Tuesday on just one day. That growth will not only allow for a successful return to athletic competition for our student-athletes, but help Long Beach State Athletics thrive into the future.
"So many came together to make Beach Athletics stronger which will help out student-athletes thrive and achieve their goals," said Fee. "The Drive to 4900 does not stop and we encourage you to share our story with others who can help make a difference. Thank you to each and every one of you who invests in Beach Athletics!"
