The new conference leader joins the league after 21 years with the Mountain West.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Beach Athletics is excited to welcome a new member to the Big West family as the conference office announced Monday that Dan Butterly will serve as the new commissioner of the Big West Conference, replacing Dennis Farrell who is retiring on July 1 after a 40-year career with the conference.
Starting a transition on June 1, Butterly has worked for the Mountain West Conference for the last 21 years and serves as the Senior Associate Commissioner. The acting sport and championship administrator for men's basketball within the Mountain West Conference, Butterly has also played a role in national initiatives as well as part of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Issues Committee, the NCAA MCBO Board of Managers and serving as the chair of the College Football Playoff licensing committee.
Long Beach State President Jane Close Conoley served as the chair of the search committee. "The Presidents and Chancellors of the Big West universities look forward to working with Dan Butterly," stated Conoley in Monday's announcement. "He is visionary, highly respected and experienced, and his strong commitment to academic and athletic success makes him a great match with our conference's values."
"Dan Butterly brings tremendous experience, an engaging personality, and most importantly proven leadership skills to our conference office," said Long Beach State Director of Athletics Andy Fee. "I applaud the search committee and campus CEO's on this announcement. Dan will be an effective communicator who cares deeply about student-athletes and their experience competing in the classroom and on the field of competition. The Big West Conference is strong and united, and will grow even stronger under Dan's leadership and partnership."
Butterly is just the fifth commissioner of the Big West in its 51-year history, following 28 years of leadership from Dennis Farrell, who is retiring at the end of June, as is longtime Deputy Commissioner Rob Halvaks.
Long Beach State is a charter member of the Big West Conference, and 16 Division I athletics programs compete under the Big West banner. The Beach is an eight-time winner of the Big West Commissioner's Cup, the conference's highest athletics honor.
