After an impressive week that included a series win over No. 6 Mississippi State, the Dirtbags received both Big West awards this week. Redshirt freshman Connor Kokx was named Big West Player of the Week for the first time while Adam Seminaris earned his second career Pitcher of the Week nod.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The accolades continue to roll in for the Dirtbags, and this week's Big West weekly baseball awards are both going to Long Beach State. Outfielder Connor Kokx has been named the Big West Player of the Week while LHP Adam Seminaris is the Big West Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
This is the first weekly award for Kokx in his career, and he's the first Dirtbags player to win Big West Player of the Week since teammate Leonard Jones won the honor on May 7, 2018. Kokx was on base constantly last week, posting a .688 on-base percentage in four games. The redshirt freshman was 7-for-12 (.583) at the plate with a double, three runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base. He also made some fine defensive plays in center field, where he has started in all but two games this season. Kokx is currently riding a six-game hitting streak, and he has five multi-hit games so far in 2020.
Seminaris posted one of the best starts of his career on Friday night, and is off to a sensational start to the season. The junior southpaw shut down one of the best teams in the country, holding No. 6 Mississippi State to just three baserunners in eight shutout innings. After five no-hit innings, Seminaris allowed a leadoff single in the sixth, but that was it. He also issued a pair of walks and tallied 10 strikeouts against the Bulldogs.
This is the second weekly award for Seminaris in his career. He was also the Big West Pitcher of the Week on May 6, 2019. Seminaris is yet to allow a run this season, allowing just six basreunners in 15.0 innings pitched while racking up a team-high 22 strikeouts. His 0.40 WHIP ranks second in the nation overall, and is the lowest of any starting pitcher in the country.
Prior to this week's haul, Alfredo Ruiz was named Big West Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17. That means the Dirtbags have now won half of the weekly awards issued by the Big West so far this season.
Long Beach State returns to action on Tuesday night at San Diego State. The Dirtbags return home this weekend to host Xavier for a three-game series.
