Long Beach State Struggles in Road Loss at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Long Beach State struggled early on and was never able to recover from an early deficit as the Beach fell to Cal Poly on the road, 61-41.
With the loss, Long Beach State drops to 10-12 overall and 5-4 in Big West action, while Cal Poly improves to 6-14 and 3-6 in league play.
The game got off to a slow start as neither team scored until nearly three minutes in. Cal Poly broke the 0-0 tie at 7:08 and held the lead from there. The Mustangs led the Beach by as many as six (14-8) in the first quarter, but Justina King's three with just five seconds left in the frame made it a three-point game (14-11) heading into the second quarter.
Cal Poly opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run forcing a Long Beach State timeout at 5:50 as the Beach trailed 20-11. The Beach committed 13 turnovers in the first half and knocked down just 2-of-7 free throws as LBSU trailed 29-17 at halftime.
The Beach had a better second half, but the damage had been done. Another 8-0 Cal Poly run put the Mustangs up by 20 (40-20) as Long Beach State found itself falling further behind. The Beach headed into the final quarter down 46-28.
Despite scoring 13 points in the fourth – their highest output in the game – Long Beach State was still outscored by the Mustangs 15-13. Cal Poly used a 57.8 field goal percentage (26-for-45) to cruise to a 61-41 win over Long Beach State.
Jasmine Hardy led LBSU with 15 points and four rebounds, while King added 10 points, three assists and two steals for the Beach.
Cal Poly was led by Alicia Roufosse's double-double as she finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Abbey Ellis and Sierra Campisano added 18 and 15 points, respectively, for the Mustangs.
Long Beach State returns home to host UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
