Beach Women’s Basketball Rallies to Defeat UC Santa Barbara, 59-53

Shanaijah Davison led the Beach with 19 points and seven rebounds in the victory

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State used a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter and turned a six-point deficit into a three-point lead as the Beach went on to win, 59-53, over UC Santa Barbara on Thursday evening at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach's (11-12, 6-4 Big West) come-from-behind victory saw LBSU outscore the Gauchos (9-14, 4-6 Big West) 23-13 in the final 10 minutes of action as Long Beach State shot a sizzling 70-percent (7-for-10) from the field, while making 90-percent of their free throws (9-for-10).
Junior guard Shanaijah Davison led Long Beach State with 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Another strong performance came from Justina King as the sophomore guard tallied 17 points, five assists, three steals, and one rebound in the win.
One of the top defensive teams in the Big West, LBSU forced UCSB into 23 turnovers and collected 13 steals. The Beach scored 24 points off of turnovers as they capitalized on each turn. In addition to Davison and King's three steals a piece, Lauren Green swiped three steals of her own as did Cydnee Kinslow to help lead the Beach defense.
Kinslow, along with Jasmine Hardy, also added five boards, while posting four points. Hardy, meanwhile added six points on the night.
Long Beach State got off to a slow start, shooting just 26.7 percent (4-for-15) in the first quarter and was held to just eight points. But the Beach kicked up the offense a notch in the second quarter with a 50-percent showing from the field (7-for-14). However, UC Santa Barbara shot 54.5 percent (6-for-11) in the second quarter to outscore the Beach 20-17 and take a 30-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Beach heated up in the second half as they came out and limited the Gauchos to 28.6-percent shooting in the third quarter. LBSU used a 7-0 run highlighted by a layup from Hardy to cut UC Santa Barbara's lead down to one (37-36) with just 16 seconds remaining in the frame. However, Coco Miller would drain a three with only three ticks left on the clock to send the game into the fourth quarter with UCSB leading LBSU, 40-36.
After the Gauchos extended their lead to six (42-36) to start the fourth quarter, Kinslow's jumper at 9:23 jumpstarted the Beach as Long Beach State went on a 9-0 run which gave the hosts a 45-42 lead after another Kinslow jumper at 7:10. Despite the Gauchos' efforts, the Beach led the rest of the way as Long Beach State came away with a 59-53 win.
UC Santa Barbara got a double-double from Ila Lane who finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, Coco Miller added 11 points, with three assists and three steals.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. at UC Riverside.
