Long Beach State Completes Season Sweep Of Hawai’i With 64-60 Home Win

2/22/2020 8:48:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Men’s Basketball has now won three of their last four.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State came together with another lock-down defensive performance and led nearly wire-to-wire against Hawai'i, holding off a late charge from the Rainbow Warriors for a 64-60 win.

Hawai'i (15-11, 6-6 Big West) would actually take an early lead, pushing their edge to as many as six points at 18-12, but Long Beach State (10-18, 5-7 Big West) would lock down defensively and heat up outside in a crucial first-half run that turned the tide.

Michael Carter III, who scored a team-high 15 on the night, got the run started with a 3-pointer, and after a pair of Jordan Roberts free throws and a Chance Hunter basket, back-to-back threes from Max De Geest and Hunter capped a 13-2 explosion in under three minutes that put totally swung the momentum.

Holding the Rainbow Warriors to 28.6 percent shooting in the first half, Long Beach State would hold Hawai'i scoreless over the final two minutes to really capitalize on that run, extending their lead from three to 10 at 34-24 to go into halftime.

In the second half, Long Beach State would lead by as many as 16, and were up by double-figures with four minutes remaining, but some missed free throws and late turnovers gave Hawai'i a chance. Crucially, Justin Webster only made two of three when fouled on a three-point attempt to keep a two possession lead for the Beach in the final minute, and Roberts knocked down a pair when it really mattered with 16 seconds left to seal the win.

Long Beach State had a balanced effort in both scoring and on the glass, helping the Beach take a 40-33 rebounding edge. Six players had at least six points on the night, and seven players had four or more rebounds, led by Roberts who had seven. Freshman Joshua Morgan was the other double-figure scorer for the Beach, joining Carter III while adding six rebounds and two more blocks. While continuing to extend his single-season record, Morgan is now tied for ninth all-time in career blocks with 67 at the Beach.

Long Beach State will look to continue their momentum next week, hosting CSUN on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in another game televised live on ESPN3 from the Walter Pyramid.
