Tough Second Half Stymies Women’s Hoops in Loss to UC Irvine

King, Kinslow lead the Beach in scoring in setback

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State shot just 23.5 percent from the field in the second half as the Beach were downed by UC Irvine, 70-61, on Thursday night in the Black & Blue Rivalry Game.
The Beach (11-14, 6-6 Big West) led by as many as 15 points in the first half, but went cold in the second as the Anteaters (9-17, 5-7 Big West) outscored LBSU 38-26 in the final 20 minutes.
UC Irvine came out firing as the Anteaters used a 6-0 run to jump out in front 9-2 in the first quarter. However, Long Beach State knocked down eight-straight points highlighted by a three from senior Cydnee Kinslow to take a 10-9 lead as UCI called for a timeout with just under four minutes remaining in the frame. The break in action did little to stop the Beach. LBSU closed the first quarter on a 16-1 run and took an 18-10 lead into the second quarter.
Shanaijah Davison drained a three to double up the Anteaters as the Beach led 24-12 before extending that lead to as many as 15 (32-17) after Aaryon Green made a layup at 5:02. With the game going Long Beach State's way, UC Irvine slowly chipped away and managed to cut the Beach's lead down to three (35-32) at halftime as Haleigh Talbert sunk a three at the buzzer.
The Anteaters continued their hot-shooting into the second half as UC Irvine shot 46.7 percent (7-for-15) from the field and limited the Beach to just 28.6 percent shooting (4-for-14). The visitors outscored the hosts 20-11 in the frame as LBSU saw its once double-figure lead turn into a six-point deficit (49-46) with just 1:26 left to play in the quarter. Jayde Caydee led the way for the Eaters as she contributed 12 of her 24 points in the third quarter alone.
Down 52-46 entering the fourth quarter, Long Beach State struggled to find the basket as the Beach connected on just 4-of-20 field goals. With the Beach's offensive struggles continuing, the Anteaters capitalized knocking down 8-of-13 field goals (61.5%) and 2-of-3 three-pointers. UCI pushed its lead to as many as 12 (68-56) with 2:15 left in to play and held a 70-58 lead with just one minute remaining. However, LBSU got a three from Justina King at the buzzer to end the game down by nine (70-61).
King led LBSU with 16 points, while adding five assists, two rebounds, and a pair of steals. Kinslow tallied 12 points, all of which came from beyond the arc, while also posting four rebounds, four steals, two assists, without committing a turnover. Ma'Qhi Berry led the squad with nine boards, to tie her career-high, while also posting seven points, five assists, and three steals. Aaryon Green had a solid night with eight points and seven rebounds.
Cadee led the Anteaters with 24 points, while Talbert contributed 16, and Tahlia Garza added 10. Lauren Saiki dished out 11 assists, to go along with six points, five steals, and one rebound. Meanwhile, Sophia Locandro posted eight boards, seven points, two steals, and a pair of assists for UC Irvine.
Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track next week when the Beach travels to CSUN on Thursday, Feb. 27 for a 7 p.m. contest.
