Jordan Roberts set a season-high with 18 points, while Chance Hunter led LBSU with 19 in the defeat.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara were locked in another defensive battle similar to their last meeting through 20 minutes, but Matt Freeman and the Gauchos got hot in the second half and pulled away for a 87-62 win Saturday.
Sophomore Chance Hunter scored 19 for Long Beach State and led the way on the glass with eight rebounds, while junior Jordan Roberts had his most complete game of the season despite the defeat, scoring a season-high 18 with seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Hunter was hot early, making his first three 3-pointers and helped lift Long Beach State to a quick lead. The Beach would hold the edge as late as the nine-minute mark up 17-15, but the Gauchos went on a 7-2 run to take a five point lead. That's where the cushion stayed after the first half, with UCSB on top 32-27 as the Beach held the Gauchos to 33.3 percent shooting but only shot 32.1 percent themselves.
The second half was all Gauchos. Freeman, who had 11 points at halftime, kicked off the second with a 3-pointer and made four straight baskets on the offensive end for UCSB to push the lead to 11 at 45-34.
Long Beach State would find Joshua Morgan inside for a slam to cut the lead to eight at 53-45, but that was the closest the Beach would get.
Leading by 15 in the final minutes, Long Beach State continued to chase the game but the Gauchos stayed hot, increasing the lead while shooting 58.6 percent in the second half.
A road test is up next, as Long Beach State will face a critical matchup on the road in San Luis Obispo at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5.
