Long Beach State Falls On The Road At San Francisco

12/10/2020 8:48:00 PM | Men's Basketball

The Beach had 28 bench points but couldn't keep up with the Dons.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – A late decision allowed Thursday night's contest to be played in the Dons' home arena, War Memorial Gym rather than in Santa Cruz and San Francisco took full advantage of the friendly confines, shooting 58% on the way to a 107-62 victory over the Beach.

San Francisco (5-2) was particularly hot from outside, finishing 18-of-33 from beyond the arc, accounting for 54 points on 54.5% shooting, and Long Beach State (1-2) didn't have the firepower to keep up on the road.

The Beach took a 4-0 lead early behind baskets from Joe Hampton and Isaiah Washington, but the first cold spell of the night led to a 12-0 run for USF, who led by nine before Hampton snapped the run with 12:24 left in the first half.

The early runs continued as Long Beach State fought back to tie the game at 14-14 on a jumper from Trever Irish, but the Dons would score eight unanswered to begin to pull away. Heating up, San Francisco scored 30 points in the final ten minutes of the half to take a 44-25 lead into the break.

Coming out of halftime, a 3-point hit from Michael Carter III and another Irish bucket in the paint helped chip into the lead that was 16 at 49-33. Two more big runs would help San Francisco seal the win. The Dons were led by 24 points from Damari Milstead and 18 from Jamaree Bouyea.

Joe Hampton had nine points to lead Long Beach State, while Chance Hunter had eight rebounds as the high rebounder for the Beach.

Long Beach State had a better bench performance in its third game of the season. Irish tied his career-high with eight points, and freshman Jadon Jones also added eight as the Beach got 28 points off of the bench after scoring just five over the first two games of the season.

Next up for Long Beach State is the previously postponed season opener against UCLA. Rescheduled for December 15, tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
