LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Head Men's Golf Coach Michael Wilson announced the signing of two incoming freshman for the 2021-22 season in Steven Deitsch and Ian Gilligan.
Steven Deutsch
Chula Vista, Calif. | Olympian High School
Deutsch will come to Long Beach State after prepping at Olympian High School in Chula Vista, Calif., where he was named to the All-Mesa League First Team four straight years. Over the past two years of junior tournament play, he registered 10 wins and six runner-up tournament finishes. Most notable, Deutsch took four first-place finishes. One of his four wins came at the FCG International Junior Championship World Series where he shot a 68-71-64, while he also claimed first at the FCG San Diego Junior Amateur with a 69-66-64 showing. Additionally, Deutsch fired a 70-63 to win the Toyota Tour Cup Twin Oaks and earned the win at the FCG Labor Day Championship after shooting 68-67.
A member of the Prestigious California North/South Cup Team, Deutsch also took home the 2019 Ricky Fowler Award for lowest stroke average for the Valley Junior Golf Association. In addition to playing competitive golf, he was also a starter all four years on the Olympian High Varsity Basketball Team.
Wilson on Deutsch:
"We're excited to welcome Steven to the Long Beach State golf family. I believe he will come in and have immediate impact. Steven is an exceptional student and a hard worker. He has an explosive game shown through his ability to put up low rounds. He's not afraid to put himself in a competitive environment and win. He's also a great athlete. We look forward to watching his future unfold here at the Beach."
Ian Gilligan
Reno, Nev. | Galena High School
Gilligan hails from Reno, Nev., where he competed at Galena High School. An accomplished and talented golfer, Gilligan shot a 66-68 to win the 2020 North California Junior Tour Championship, while also winning the 2020 JTNC Fall Series II after firing 71-73-74. Gilligan also finished runner up at the competitive 2020 NCGA Junior Championship after shooting 71-73-74.
He qualified for the 2019 Korn Ferry Ellie May Classic and competed in the 2018 Drive, Chip, and Putt Championship at Augusta National. One of Gilligan's many notable accomplishments came in 2016 when he took first at the PGA Junior League National Championship.
Wilson on Gilligan:
"For as good as his golf game is, Ian is every bit as good a person. He's had to face a lot of adversity in his young life, having beaten cancer. He has a unique perspective to life and golf. He plays with passion and joy and a strong internal competitive drive. He's a tenacious worker with big hopes and dreams who has made a statement with his competitive junior play and results. I'm confident that Ian will have immediate impact and will lead through his daily example and scores."
