LONG BEACH, Calif. –
Junior guard Shanaijah Davison and redshirt sophomore Ma'Qhi Berry teamed up to lead Long Beach State to a 72-69 victory over Cal Poly to open Big West Conference action. In the process, Davison made Long Beach State history as she became the 26th player at the Beach to record 1,000-career points.

The Beach (6-8, 1-0 Big West) were led by Davison and Berry who tallied 19 and 24 points, respectively. Berry led the offensive attack with a new career-high, while Davison collected her team-leading 11th double-figure scoring contest of the season.

Joining the duo in double digits was sophomore Justina King who added 12 points of her own to go along with a team-leading six assists and two blocks.

After Cal Poly (3-9, 0-1 Big West) opened the game on a 10-0 run, Davison got things going for the Beach as she knocked down seven points in less than two minutes with her layup at 4:24 resulting in her 1,000-point milestone. Davison's run sparked the Beach to rattle off nine straight points capped by a three from Berry to cut the Mustangs' lead down to five (19-14) before making it a four-point game (21-17) heading into the second quarter.

The Beach had a solid second quarter as they shot 56.3 percent from the field, knocking down 9-of-16 field goals. Despite LBSU's hot-shooting, Cal Poly was quick to match the Beach as the Mustangs connected on 8-of-16 to shoot 50 percent. The two teams battled back and forth and Long Beach State held a one-point advantage (42-41) at halftime.

The third quarter began close, but Long Beach State used a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead (60-55) over the Mustangs with 1:14 left in the frame. The Beach outscored the Mustangs 20-16 in the period and held a 62-57 edge heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

Long Beach State held a slight lead over Cal Poly until 4:27 left in the game when the Mustangs knotted the game on a three by Malia Holt. Berry countered with a layup at 3:38 to give the Beach a lead, 69-67, it would not relinquish as the hosts would go on to win, 72-69.

The Beach shot 44.3 percent from the field in the game and knocked down 11 threes as Berry contributed four treys, while Cydnee Kinslow accounted for three, and Davison and Jasmine Hardy each notched two from long distance.
