Long Beach State Holds off Hawaii for 62-55 Victory

Jasmine Hardy leads the Beach with a career-high 18 points in the win

LONG BEACH, Calif. –
Long Beach State opened the game against Hawaii with five-straight points and never trailed as the Beach led the Rainbow Wahine by as many as 23 points, before claiming a 62-55 victory Thursday at the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach (8-10, 3-2 Big West) turned in another solid defensive effort as they held the Rainbow Wahine (8-10, 2-3 Big West) to just 15 points in the first half on a mere 23.5 shooting percentage. Long Beach State capitalized on Hawaii's early offensive struggles and held a commanding lead which proved to be key as the Rainbow Wahine heated up in the fourth quarter to make it a two-possession game. With the Beach up by 23 (52-29), Long Beach State was able to hold on and come away with a 62-55 victory.

Sophomore Jasmine Hardy had a career game as she came off the bench and scored a career-high 18 points, while adding two steals, two assists, and one rebound. Hardy provided a strong presence on the court in her 21 minutes of action as she led all LBSU players.

 
Shanaijah Davison and Justina King also recorded double-figure performances as Davison tallied 17 points and King added 12. Davison also contributed six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Cydnee Kinslow led the Beach in rebounding for the 10 th time this season as the senior forward collected seven boards, one steal, and one block to help the defensive effort. Ma'Qhi Berry also added a pair of steals and a block, while Kristyna Jeskeova put up one block and two boards in six minutes of action.

Long Beach State opened the game knocking down five-straight points and extended its lead to 14-5 after a 9-2 run. The Beach shot 33.3 percent from the field in the first quarter, but more notably only allowed Hawaii to connect on 2-of-9 field goals in the frame. The Beach limited the Rainbow Wahine to a mere five points in the opening 10 minutes as LBSU held a 16-5 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Beach continued its solid defense into the second quarter as they opened the frame on a 10-2 run to take a 26-8 advantage. Long Beach State shot 60-percent (6-for-10) in the second quarter and made all six free throws, while Hawaii struggled with 25 percent shooting from the field. With everything going Long Beach State's way, the Beach boasted a 20-point lead (35-15) at halftime.

 
Hawaii found its groove in the second half and scored 19 points to Long Beach State's 17 in the third quarter. The Rainbow Wahine shot 41.2 percent, while the Beach shot 42.9 percent as the visitors made it a 14-point game (41-27), before LBSU pushed its lead up to 23 (52-29) with 1:28 left in the frame. Still holding a commanding lead, the Beach were up, 52-34, at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw the tables turn as Long Beach State struggled offensively connecting on just 1-of-12 field goals for an 8.3 shooting percentage, while Hawaii shot 41.7 percent from the field. The Rainbow Wahine outscore the Beach 21-10 and cut LBSU's lead all the way down to six on three occasions. Hawaii had LBSU fans biting their nails as the Rainbow Wahine made it a 60-54 game with 17 seconds remaining. After Long Beach State called a timeout, the Beach regained control and Hardy put the game out of reach after sinking a pair of free throws en route to LBSU winning 62-55.

Hawaii was led by Julissa Tago's 22-point performance, while Savannah Reier added 15 points. Courtney Middap registered six rebounds, while Nae Nae Calhoun dished out four assists.

Long Beach State continues Big West Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 25 at UC Irvine in a 2 p.m. contest at the Bren Events Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
