Beach Women’s Volleyball Suffers Sweep to James Madison

Long Beach State opens the Gator Invitational with 3-0 setback on Friday morning

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team kicked off the Gainesville Gator Invitational on Friday morning against James Madison, and dropped a 3-0 [25-21, 25-19, 25-22] to the Dukes.
The Beach (2-5) have lost their last four matches and are looking to get back on the winning track with they face South Florida this evening at 5 p.m. (ET) / 2 p.m. (PT). The Dukes (4-3), meanwhile, picked up their third straight win.
Sophomore outside hitter Kashauna Williams led all scorers with 13 kills, while adding seven digs. Allison Martinez came off the bench and added 11 kills, three digs, two aces, and one block, while Tia Chavira (21 assists) and Carly Aigner-Swesey (6 assists) teamed up at setter.
Defensively, Hailey Harward paced the back row with 11 digs, while YiZhi Xue led the team with six blocks at the net, while adding as many digs to tie her career-high.
The Beach held the lead in each of the three sets, but the Dukes stayed within striking distance. James Madison capitalized on several LBSU miscues and used a few scoring runs to go from trailing to leading.
That trend continued throughout each set as JMU came back and won in the first set, 25-21, before claiming the second, 25-19.
LBSU led most of the third set and looked to avoid the sweep, but JMU chipped away and evened the score at 19-all, before eventually defeating the Beach, 25-22, to complete the sweep.
James Madison was led by Briley Brind'Amor's 11 kills and seven digs, while setter Sarah Martin contributed 29 assists, nine digs, and seven kills. Libero Savannah Marshall added nine digs of her own, while Sophia Davis posted five blocks.
