Long Beach State Baseball welcomes in a pair of additional signees to its 2019 recruiting class, as catcher Thomas Greely (Delta College) and RHP Jake Rons (Cathedral Catholic HS) have both signed on to join the Dirtbags next season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Dirtbags added two signees to the 2019 recruiting class with the addition of catcher Thomas Greely and pitcher Jake Rons. Interim co-head coaches Greg Bergeron and Dan Ricabal announced the signings and offered their analysis of the incoming talents, who will join the program for the 2019-20 season.
Â
Thomas Greely, C, San Joaquin Delta College/Tracy HS (Tracy, Calif.)
Â
Greely is in his sophomore season as the starting backstop at Delta College. The switch-hitting sophomore is hitting .309 through 31 games this season with 18 RBIs and a .434 on-base percentage. As a freshman for the Mustangs, he hit .333 with 31 runs scored and 25 RBIs in 44 games. He also walked (17) more times than he struck out (16) during his freshman campaign.
Â
He really stands out defensively behind the plate, winning a Gold Glove following his freshman season while leading the Mustangs to the 2018 CCCAA State Championship. Opposing baserunners had just a 50 percent success rate stealing bases against Greely, going just 19-for-38. As a high school senior at Tracy High, Greely hit .372 with 27 runs and 17 RBIs in 35 games played. He was a three-year varsity contributor and a .342 career hitter in high school, earning All-Tri-City League honors in each season.
Â
Bergeron: "Thomas is an outstanding defensive catcher. He has a strong and accurate arm to go along with great blocking and receiving skills. He is a switch hitter that will add balance to our lineup. We are excited to have Thomas on board and look forward to his future in our program."
Jake Rons, RHP, Cathedral Catholic HS (San Diego, Calif.)
Â
Rons is a three-year varsity player as both a pitcher and an outfielder. He's had his best season on the mound as a senior, currently sporting a 1.96 ERA through eight starts. Rons also has 38 strikeouts in 39.1 innings pitched this season. His best start came in a 2-0 win over St. Augustine HS on Mar. 26, when Rons threw seven innings of shutout baseball, striking out seven while allowing just four hits and a walk.
Â
As a hitter, Rons is batting .368 during his senior season, collecting seven hits in just 19 at-bats with a handful of RBIs.
Â
Ricabal: "Jake is athletic, and a bigtime competitor. He has arm speed, and can really spin a breaking ball. Jake has the stuff, and the mentality, to be a quality back-end bullpen arm. Jake is going to be able to help us right away. The Dirtbags are fired up to add Jake Rons to our 2020 pitching staff."
Â
Greely and Rons join the eight other players who signed their National Letters of Intent with Long Beach State back in November.
