Transfer Michael Carter III and local product Justin Rene will join Long Beach State for the 2019-20 season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Head Coach Dan Monson and the Long Beach State coaching staff have received commitments from two additional players to join the Beach in 2019-20, welcoming a pair of guards in Michael Carter III and Justin Rene.
Michael Carter III, So., G, 6-5/190 (Seattle, Wash./Washington)
Michael Carter III comes to Long Beach State as a Division I transfer after a highly-regarded prep career in his home town of Seattle where he prepped at O'Dea High School. After leading his team to a state championship as a senior, averaging 17.0 points per game, Carter III stayed in his hometown, completing the 2017-18 season with Washington as a freshman. Playing in 17 games, Carter III had a season high of nine points at Utah after returning from an injury that cost the freshman 11 games.
Carter III spent the 2018-19 season at South Dakota State, but never played for the Jackrabbits and will have sophomore eligibility when he takes the floor at Long Beach State.
Monson on Carter III:
"Michael is a long athletic guard that can play multiple positions. We love his versatility, and athleticism that he utilizes on both ends of the court. Michael is an older, experienced player who will complement our young returning core group. We are excited to add his versatility and experience."
Justin Rene, Fr., G., 6-3/175 (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS)
Justin Rene will be a name familiar to Moore League fans, as the reigning Player of the Year from Long Beach Poly will stay in Long Beach and continue his career at the Beach. Rene averaged 17.8 points per game and 1.2 assists per game for the Jackrabbits while leading the squad to the Moore League championship and a CIF Division I playoff appearance. Rene was named to the Southern California All-Varsity squad, and is the first Long Beach Poly product to join the Beach since Roschon Prince.
Monson on Rene:
"We are excited about Justin's competitiveness, work ethic and overall motor. He is a versatile guard that can score in multiple ways on offense, and is a very good on ball defender. Justin's love for the game is contagious, and his passion to represent his local community is heartfelt."
