Beach Women’s Basketball Drops Contest Against UC Davis

Long Beach State shot well from long distance, but couldn’t overcome an early deficit

LONG BEACH, Calif. –
The Long Beach State women's basketball team saw three players reach double-figures, but the Beach were unable to overcome an early deficit as LBSU fell to UC Davis, 66-49, on Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach (8-19, 5-9 Big West) shot well from behind the arc, shooting 42.3-percent as they were led by Naomi Hunt who connected on 4-of-6 shots from three-point range en route to finishing with 16 points. Behind Hunt were Shanaijah Davison and Justina King who added 14 and 11 points, respectively.

UC Davis (20-6, 12-1), meanwhile, shot 44.2 percent from the field and 45.5-percent from long distance as the Aggies were powered by Morgan Bertsch's game-high 25 points.

LBSU found itself down 8-0 to start the game and was never able to recover as the Beach trailed throughout the contest. The Aggies' early lead translated to a 30-20 halftime lead. But Long Beach State would not go away. The Beach came out of the locker room got a three from Hunt to cut the Aggies' lead to seven (30-23). However, UC Davis went on a 10-0 run to extend its lead back up to 17 (40-23).

The Beach went into the fourth quarter down by 19 (50-31) but would not quit. LBSU showed its grit and determination as the Beach outscored the Aggies 18-16 in the final 10 minutes of action. However, the damage had already been done as Long Beach State was unable to overcome the early deficit as it fell to UC Davis, 66-49.

In addition to solid efforts from Hunt, Davison and King, Long Beach State got a stout performance from Cydnee Kinslow who led the team with eight rebounds. Additionally, Kianna Hamilton-Fisher came off the bench to lead the squad with three steals, while adding five points, three boards, and two assists.

Long Beach State will play its final home game of the regular season on Thursday, March 7 when the Beach hosts Cal State Fullerton at the Walter Pyramid at 7 p.m.
