ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The top-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team rolled over Quincy in a 3-0 [25-18, 25-14, 25-17] sweep on Friday at the Lindenwood Invitational. The Beach used a total team effort to hit .362 in the contest, while serving up 12 aces en route to their ninth-straight victory.
Head coach Alan Knipe utilized his bench in the match as 14 players entered the contest for LBSU (9-0). Earning the start against Quincy (3-5), freshman middle blocker Shane Holdaway capitalized on the opportunity and hit .429 (5-2-7) with five kills, one block, and one ace. Additionally, sophomore outside hitter Ethan Siegfried collected his second start of his career and finished the match with three kills, two aces, and one dig.
Sophomore setter Carlos Rivera picked up his first-career start and ran a solid offense as he dished out 27 assists to go along with two digs, and one kill.
Pacing the Beach defense was freshman libero, Grant Guinasso, who earned his first-career start. Guinasso led Long Beach State with six digs, while adding an assist in the match.
The Beach were led offensively by seniors TJ DeFalco and Kyle Ensing who each posted eight kills in the contest. DeFalco hit .500 (8-2-12), while Ensing hit .400 (8-2-15). DeFalco also led the charge from the end line as he served up a season-high five service aces, just one shy of his career-best. He now has 140 aces in his career to rank second all-time at Long Beach State.
DeFalco wasn't the only one who had a big night from the service line. Redshirt freshman Marc Moody came off the bench and tallied three aces. Two of his three aces closed out the second set for the Beach as he went back-to-back to give Long Beach State a 25-14 victory over the Hawks.
Quincy opened the match with three straight points and held the lead until Long Beach State used a 4-0 run to take a 12-11 edge. From there, the two teams traded leads and found themselves deadlocked at 15-all. The Beach tallied four-straight points to go ahead for good (17-15) as they would go on to win, 25-18, on a kill off the hands of Alexander Anastassiades.
The Beach found their groove in the second set and hit .588 to the Hawks' .083 attack percentage. After six ties, LBSU went on a 4-0 run to go up, 9-7. Long Beach State strung together seven-straight points highlighted by three aces from DeFalco to break the game open (18-10). With the set going LBSU's way, Moody put the game away with his pair of aces.
Everything was clicking for Long Beach State by the third set as the Beach never trailed. LSBU hit .571 in the frame, while limiting the Hawks to .056 hitting. The Beach breezed through the game and came away with a 25-17 victory to complete the sweep.
Quincy finished the match hitting .034 with 19 kills on as many assists. The Hawks posted 12 digs and 3.5 total team blocks.
Long Beach State will conclude the Lindenwood Invitational Saturday, Feb. 2 with an 11 a.m. (PT) match against McKendree.
