Long Beach State Sweeps Big West Conference Weekly Awards

Tia Chavira earned both Player and Freshman of the Week honors, while Hailey Harward is named Defensive Player of the Week
LONG BEACH, Calif. – After picking up a pair of conference victories over UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly, Long Beach State swept the Big West Conference Weekly Awards as freshman Tia Chavira earned both Player and Freshman of the Week honors, while senior Hailey Harward took home Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Chavira moved from setter to outside hitter and excelled for the Beach as her performances were instrumental in Long Beach State's two wins over the weekend. She tallied a career-high 14 kills to go along with 10 digs for a double-double in a sweep of UCSB, before besting that mark with a new career-high of 16 versus Cal Poly.
She hit .371 for the week with 30 kills and just seven errors in 62 attempts. She was consistent with .375 hitting (14-2-32) against the Gauchos and .367 (16-5-30) versus the Mustangs. Chavira averaged 4.29 kills, 2.29 digs, and 0.57 blocks per set as LBSU has extended its winning streak to four.
Harward picked up her sixth-career Big West Defensive Player of the Week award, and her second this season, anchoring the back row with a pair of stellar performances. She averaged 4.14 digs per set on the week as the Beach swept UC Santa Barbara and defeated Cal Poly in four sets.
The 5-foot-9 libero tallied 14 digs against UCSB and adding 15 more versus Cal Poly, helping Long Beach State limit opponents to a .134 attack percentage on the week. Additionally, Harward served up a season-high four aces against the Mustangs as she is just one ace tie of jumping into the top-10 all-time at the Beach in career aces.
Harward's 29 digs on the week upped her career total to 1,565 which is just 13 shy of moving her into the top three all-time at LBSU.
