Long Beach State Defeats UC Riverside in Straight Sets

LONG BEACH, Calif. – With a 3-0 [25-18, 25-18, 25-16] sweep over UC Riverside, Long Beach State has now won three of its last four matches. The Beach held the Highlanders to under 20 points in each set on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid.
Sophomore setter Carly Aigner-Swesey recorded her third double-double of the season as she led LBSU (8-14, 5-5 Big West) to a .348 attack percentage with 35 assists and 12 digs. The hitting percentage is the second highest offensive output for the Beach this season and just the second time LBSU has hit over .300 this year.
Sophomore outside hitter Kashauna Williams led the team with 16 kills, while senior middle blocker YiZhi Xue posted a .619 attack percentage with 13 kills on 21 errorless swings.
With Long Beach State's offense going strong, the Beach defense stepped up and limited UC Riverside (5-16, 1-9 Big West) to a .112 hitting percentage. Senior libero Hailey Harward led the charge as she paced the back row with 15 digs, while Dylan Dela Cruz and Carly Hill added 10 and nine digs, respectively.
Long Beach State opened the match on a 6-1 run and led the entire first set. Williams connected on 5-of-10 swings with just one error, while Xue and Katie Kennedy added three kills each to help the Beach to a .317 attack percentage. Meanwhile, Harward, Dela Cruz, and Aigner-Swesey kept the Highlanders off balance with their solid defensive efforts as they limited UCR to a .057 clip as LBSU cruised to a 25-18 win.
The second set started off close as the two teams exchanged leads seven times before Long Beach State gained control. The Beach used a 5-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back kills from Xue, to break the game open (18-13). From there, LBSU kept UCR at bay as the Beach claimed a 25-18 victory to take a 2-0 set lead.
LBSU kicked off the third set on a 4-1 run, but UC Riverside quickly bounded back to even things up at 8-8. After another few ties, Long Beach State tallied four straight points to go up 14-10. After the Beach took the lead they never looked back. LBSU led by as many as 10 (24-14) points in the frame, before closing out the set and match, 25-16.

UC Riverside's leading scorer was Ashley Dittman as she finished the match with eight kills. Dejah Dade and Morgan Kline each notched 11 assists, while Renata Bath led the defensive effort with 14 digs.
Long Beach State returns to action Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Walter Pyramid when the Beach host UC Davis at 7 p.m. in an ESPN3 contest.
