Statement re: CA Senate Bill 206 from LBSU Director of Athletics Andy Fee:
Â
"The academic and co-curricular success of our student-athletes is at the heart of the Beach Athletics program. California Senate Bill 206 becoming law does not change that guiding pillar in any way.
Instead, we now begin a conversation about what collegiate athletics in California will look like in 2023 when the new law takes effect. Discussions nationwide among coaches, student-athletes, administrators, legislatures and the NCAA will be ongoing and will determine what the consequences of this bill are, both intended and unintended, while maintaining an equitable playing field across NCAA sports.
At Long Beach State University, we are proud of our culture of rules compliance. We will follow the guidelines as set forth from both the State of California and the NCAA at the conclusion of that process.
Our work in the coming months is to educate all of LB Nation about what the passage of this bill means for Long Beach State University student-athletes, their families and the broader community. We hope that an ongoing effort to make adjustments to NCAA name, image and likeness rules will ultimately lead to a more robust experience for our student-athletes, while not changing our core mission. We remain focused on creating and sustaining winning programs while developing future leaders for our community."
