Deishuan Booker neared a triple-double in the loss.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Deishuan Booker came close to recording the first triple-double in nearly 30 years for the Beach, scoring 25 points with nine rebounds, seven assists and no turnovers but the effort came up just short in an 82-71 loss to UC Santa Barbara.
Long Beach State (8-13, 2-3 Big West) started off in a hole as both Bryan Alberts and Booker came out cold in the opening minutes, and UC Santa Barbara (15-4, 4-1 Big West) took advantage to open a lead that would grow to 11 points with 8:23 to go in the first half.
Edon Maxhuni hit his third 3-pointer of the game at the first-half buzzer to cut the lead to seven points, and the Beach continued the charge out of the locker room, going on an 11-0 run capped by three free throws from Booker to take a 42-38 lead.
Three small runs followed, as the Gauchos regained the lead but the Beach bounced back. Starting with a three from Ron Freeman, the Beach chipped away and led 52-51 as the clock ticked past 10 minutes remaining. UCSB would once again recover, scoring seven straight to take the lead for good.
Booker led the team in scoring, rebounding and assists in a big night from the senior, but only had Maxhuni and Byers join him in double-figures on the night. UC Santa Barbara was led by Armond Davis, who had a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Long Beach State is back on the road to open up next week with a trip to Hawai'i before returning to the Walter Pyramid to host the back end of the Black and Blue Rivalry on Saturday, February 2.
