
Second Half Struggles Hamper Beach in Loss to UC Riverside

The Beach had three players score in double-figures in setback

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's basketball team started off strong, but was hampered by 14.7 percent shooting in the second half as the Beach dropped a 73-59 decision to UC Riverside on Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid.
Long Beach State (5-12, 2-2 Big West) had three scorers reach double-figures in Naomi Hunt (14 points), Justina King (13 points), and Shanaijah Davison (11 points), but were unable to overcome a strong shooting UC Riverside (8-11, 2-3 Big West) team.
The Highlanders shot 54.3-percent from the field in the game and connected on 13-of-22 field goals (59.1 percent) in the second half to rally and defeat the Beach.
Long Beach State started off strong as the Beach shot 50.0-percent (13-for-26) in the first half and took a three-point lead (36-33) into the locker room at halftime. However UCR came out of the break and outscored LBSU 40-23 in the final 20 minutes of action to hand the Beach their second-straight loss.
In addition to leading the Beach in scoring, Hunt, along with Lauren Green, finished the game with a team-best six rebounds. King and Jasmine Hardy added four boards of their own.
Defensively, Long Beach State received a solid effort from sophomore Bria Rice who swiped a career-high five steals. Additionally, Rice concluded the contest with four points, three assists, and one rebound.
UC Riverside had four scorers reach double-figures as Marina Ewodo led the charge with 25 points. Jannon Otto contributed 22 points, while Malou De Kergret added 12, and Keilanei Cooper rounded out the bunch with 10.
Long Beach State looks to bounce back on Saturday, Jan. 26 when its hosts CSUN in another Big West Conference showdown at the Pyramid. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
