Long Beach State got 12 points each from Cydnee Kinslow and Jasmine Hardy, but couldn’t remain unbeaten in Big West play, suffering a 60-54 setback on Saturday evening in Santa Barbara.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Long Beach State (5-11, 2-1 Big West) rode a four-game winning streak into Saturday's matchup with UC Santa Barbara (4-12, 1-2 Big West), but the Beach suffered its first conference loss, 60-54, at The Thunderdome. Long Beach State had three players foul out on Saturday, committing 25 fouls to just 13 for the host Gauchos. UCSB was 21/28 (75.0 %) at the line while the Beach went just 6/14 (42.9 %) at the charity stripe.
Long Beach did have an advantage from long range, going 10/27 (37.0 %) from deep, led by Cydnee Kinslow and Naomi Hunt. Kinslow finished with 12 points, just two off her career high, thanks to a perfect 4/4 mark from deep. The junior also added a team-best six rebounds and three steals. Hunt was 3/4 from three, but joined Shanaijah Davison and Kianna Hamilton-Fisher as players to foul out for the Beach. Freshman Jasmine Hardy also had a dozen for Long Beach State, scoring all of her points after halftime. Classmate Justina King had just four points, but chipped in six boards and five assists.
LBSU led 13-12 after the opening quarter, getting a pair of triples from Hunt in the first 10 minutes as she led all scorers. It was then Kinslow's turn to connect from downtown as she dropped a pair of threes of her own in the second quarter. Junior Aaryon Green was a tremendous spark off the bench in the second period, getting a pair of offensive rebounds and putbacks, two steals, and also drew a charge and had a number of deflections in a very active six minutes. However, UCSB held a slight 27-25 advantage going into halftime.
In the second half, Hardy joined the scoring to push Long Beach State back in front, as three consecutive triples from Kinslow, Hardy and Hunt sent the Beach on a 9-2 run to take a 37-35 advantage and force a Santa Barbara timeout with 5:06 left in the third quarter. LBSU led by as many as four with 1:17 left in the frame, but the Gauchos were able to level the score at 43-all going into the final quarter.
The Beach then had three players foul out in the final quarter, with Davison and Hunt most impacted by foul trouble and sitting through large chunks of the second half. Hardy picked up the slack with eight of LBSU's 11 points in the final quarter, but UCSB made just enough of its free throws over the final 10 minutes to hang on for the win.
Long Beach State will look to bounce back on Thursday night with a home meeting against UC Riverside, 7 p.m. at Walter Pyramid. It will be a rematch of LBSU's conference opener, a 63-45 win over the Highlanders in Riverside on Jan. 10.
