The senior had a goal and an assist in the win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Senior Ashley Gonzales scored the opening goal and then added a second-half assist as Long Beach State turned back Northeastern 2-1 for the team's second straight win.
Long Beach State (2-1-0) found Rocio Rodriguez for a shot in the first few minutes, and kept the pressure on, breaking through early in the seventh minute. Moving from the back, Sarah Pilster found Dana Fujikuni, who turned a cross into Ashley Gonzales who beat Northeastern (1-2-0) goalkeeper Nathalie Nidetch for the opening goal.
Both sides would settle in for the remainder of the half, but the Beach would find the net to open the lead wider in the second half. Gonzales again played a key part, sending in a cross from the outside to junior Katie Pingel, who settled and fired home a second goal for the Beach in the 57th minute.
Imani McDonald would finish with six saves, four coming in the second half on a trio of long-distance attempts from the Huskies. The senior would turn way for Ashley Seymour in the final minutes, and the Huskies made the most of their best chance of the evening.
On one of three corner kicks on the night for Northwestern, Mikenna McManus was able to find the head of Eve Goulet to pull back one for the Huskies.
Long Beach State would turn away any further chances, and closed out the 2-1 win, the team's second in a row, both coming at home on George Allen Field.
The homestand continues on Sunday, when Long Beach State hosts San Diego State at 6 p.m. Follow the action live via Beach Vision at www.longbeachstate.com.
