Long Beach State Opens 2018 Season at Portland State Tournament
The Long Beach State women's volleyball team is ready to hit the court for the 2018 this weekend as the Beach open the year at the Portland State Tournament. LBSU will play a pair of matches on Friday against Boise State at noon, before going up against the host Vikings at 7 p.m. The Beach will conclude the tournament Saturday night at 7 p.m. with another match against Portland State.
About The Beach
• Long Beach State is coming off of a 10-19 season in 2017 in which the Beach went 7-9 in Big West action.
• The Beach return nine letterwinners from a year ago and welcome seven newcomers.
• Head coach Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer is back for her second year at the helm and is looking to improve upon the team's showing from last season.
• The Beach were selected to finish fourth in the Big West Conference preseason poll behind Cal Poly, Hawaii, and UC Irvine.
• Long Beach State is led by juniors Hailey Harward and YiZhi Xue, as well as senior Megan Kruidhof. Harward was a First Team All-Big West selection a year ago, while Xue and Kruidhof picked up honorable mention distinction.
• Newcomers Tyler Spriggs, a senior transfer, and freshman Kashauna Williams look to make an immediate impact for the Beach.

Scouting the Broncos
• Boise State kicks off the 2018 against Long Beach State after posting a 17-14 overall record last year.
• After recording a 10-8 ledger in the Mountain West Conference a year ago, the Broncos have been selected to finish third in the preseason poll.
• The Broncos return Sabryn Roberts, a senior outside hitter, who was an all-conference selection in 2017 after recording 339 kills as the team's second leading scorer.
• Janell Walley, a junior outside hitter, is another 2017 all-conference selection who will be back on the court this season for the Broncos.
Series vs. Boise State
Long Beach State and Boise State will face off for the eighth time in program history and the Beach lead the all-time series 7-0 as the Broncos look for their first-ever victory over LBSU. In addition to winning every match they've ever played against the Broncos, the Beach have done so in straight sets collecting seven sweeps over Boise State. Friday's meeting will be the first between the two teams in 18 years and just the second time at a neutral site.
Scouting the Vikings
• Portland State opens the 2018 season after having had a successful 2017 in which the Vikings finished with a 21-9 overall record.
• The Vikings were picked to finish fourth in the Big Sky preseason poll after having lost three starters including their libero from a year ago.
• Junior outside hitter Toni McDougald, the squad's second leading scorer from a year ago, returns to the Vikings after averaging 2.64 kills per set.
• Katy Wilson, a senior middle blocker, was solid at the net for the Vikings last season as she averaged 0.85 blocks per set.
