The Toreros came away with a 5-0 win
LONG BEACH – In an exhibition match which was predetermined to go five sets, the Long Beach State women's volleyball team suffered a 5-0 [22-25, 19-25, 8-25, 23-25, 11-15] setback to San Diego Tuesday morning at the Walter Pyramid.
Head coach Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer used the exhibition to give the majority of her team time on the court as well as utilize different lineups in preparation for the upcoming 2018 season.
Â
"This exhibition match gave us an opportunity to look at some lineups going into our preseason," McKienzie-Fuerbringer said. "I thought we saw a lot of good things that we've been working on in practice, and it exposed a couple of things that we need to go back in and work on before we get into our preseason this weekend. We learned a lot from the exhibition."
The Beach opened the match with a solid showing and out-hit the Toreros in the first set, .212 to .194. Long Beach State had its best offensive showing in the second frame when the Beach hit .407 knocking down 13 kills on 27 attempts with just two errors.
With the exception of the third set, the Beach had a solid outing throughout the match and saw positive efforts from redshirt senior Emma Kirst, junior Hailey Harward, sophomore Mina Andjelkovic, and freshman Carly Hill.
Kirst led the Beach with a .385 attack percentage (5-0-13) while adding a team best six blocks, and Harward paced the offense with 12 kills.
Andjelkovic dished out 23 assists at setter as she played in four of five sets, while freshmen Carly Aigner-Swesey and Dylan Dela Cruz each contributed six helpers.
Hill held her own at libero as she picked up 11 digs, while adding three assists.
Long Beach State will open the season on Friday, August 24 at the Portland State Tournament. The Beach will play Boise State at noon before going up against the hosts at 7 p.m.
